Bold styling, a cabin that feels bigger than it looks, and performance that changes how you think about driving. The Volkswagen ID.4 pairs SUV presence with pure electric drive – no tailpipe, no compromise. This is what switching to electric should feel like.
Book a test drive Ask a questionThe school run, the office commute, the weekend errands – the fully electric ID.4 handles it all, and does it as a proper SUV, not a compact runaround.
There's no waiting for an electric motor to catch up. The ID.4's 210kW/545Nm motor delivers full torque from the first press of the pedal – no gear changes, no lag, just immediate acceleration off the line.
The ID.4 knows when you've arrived. With your smart key in hand, sitting down wakes the car automatically – screens light up, systems come online, and you're ready to move. Foot on the brake, select drive, and go.
Plug the ID.4 into a standard household socket using the included cable, or step up to a Wallbox for quicker top-ups at home. Home (AC) charging runs up to 11kW. Out and about, DC fast chargers at places like supermarkets and service stations can charge the ID.4 Pro at up to 135kW.
That same instant-torque motor means real performance, not just quick numbers on paper. Pro Performance-based models get from 0–100km/h in 6.7 seconds – enough to make every set of lights feel like a green light.
Electric doesn't mean silent – and that's by design. Below 30km/h, the ID.4 stays quiet in the cabin while emitting an artificial exterior sound, so pedestrians and cyclists can still hear it coming.
A tight turning circle usually belonging to a small car, wrapped in genuine SUV usability. The ID.4 rides on 19-inch alloys, carries a roof railing for extra load capacity, and uses recessed door handles to keep things aerodynamic.
Step inside and the ID.4 feels open before you've even settled in. A flexible centre console, generous legroom, and comfortable seating are matched with a 12.9-inch central touchscreen and a multifunction steering wheel with touch controls and vibration feedback. Ambient lighting rounds out the lounge-like feel.
Make the cabin yours. 30-colour ambient lighting spans the dash, phone holder and doors – swap the mood daily, or pick one and stick with it.
Front Assist works alongside Autonomous Emergency Braking to watch for pedestrians and cyclists as well as other vehicles, giving the driver an early warning of a potential collision. If the driver does not react the system can initiate emergency braking.*
* Within the limits of the system. The driver must be in control of the car at all times and is not relieved of their responsibility to drive the car carefully.
Lane Assist steps in with gentle counter-steering if the ID.4 starts to drift out of its lane without you meaning to. You'll also get a visual and audible alert through the multi-function display, so you know straight away something needs your attention.
Side Assist watches the areas around the ID.4 you can't easily see, flagging nearby vehicles with a light signal in the mirror – an extra layer of awareness for you and everyone in the car. Reversing out of a tight park brings its own risks, which is where Rear Cross Traffic Alert comes in – it picks up on approaching hazards from either side and lets you know before you back out.
Adaptive Cruise Control is one of the most useful assistance features on offer. Set your top speed and the system works to keep you at or under it, while automatically maintaining a safe gap to the car ahead, within the limits of the system.

The Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) is designed to provide a standardised measurement and enables the consumer to make reliable comparisons between vehicles in terms of energy (fuel and/or electricity) consumption, emissions, and electric vehicle range. However, it should be noted that the results of this test may not accurately reflect the actual fuel consumption, emissions, or range that a driver might experience in the real world. Actual results may vary depending on various factors such as driving style, road conditions, temperature, weather, vehicle load, and maintenance. Therefore, the WLTP results should be considered as an indicator of the vehicle's performance and not as a guarantee of the actual energy consumption, emissions, or range that a driver will experience in real-world driving conditions, or for making a vehicle-to-vehicle comparison. All WLTP test values are provided in accordance with New Zealand Land transport Rule: Vehicle Efficiency and Emissions Data 2022.
Electric range from 395km (based on a Test Weight of 2,432kg) to 622km (based on a Test Weight of 2,156kg). New Zealand specification model has a weight of 2,210kg. The official fuel consumption, emissions, and EV range figures determined by the NEDC and WLTP test should be used as a guide only, or for vehicle to vehicle comparison. Actual results may vary due to factors such as driving or environmental conditions.
